Energy bills misery for Welsh households


WELSH households face the misery of being hit by more than £100 extra on their energy bills by the end of the year – on top of the £140 hike they have already faced since Christmas.


The price rises predicted by experts will come as a hammer blow to pensioners and others on low incomes.

Hitting EU's energy targets will cost Brits at least £2,000


It will cost every household in the UK at least £2,000 to comply with the new European Union target of producing 15 per cent of all energy from renewable sources by 2020, according to a report commissioned by the government.


The report also says the UK will have to spend far more to meet the target than other EU countries, because the UK lags behind the rest of Europe on renewables and is a heavy energy user

Gas boss £1.9m as bills rise



THE head of British Gas parent company Centrica raked in a massive £1.9MILLION last year, it was revealed yesterday.


Chief executive Sam Laidlaw’s £5,100-a-day bonanza comes just weeks after British Gas hiked energy bills.


It also follows a fivefold increase in profits hauled in after British Gas waited before passing cheaper gas costs on to millions of customers.


Mr Laidlaw’s salary was £873,000 – £23,000 up on 2006. He got a £753,000 bonus and other benefits worth £244,000.

Households in Northern Ireland saving £230 through energy efficiency


Energy efficiency in Northern Ireland homes has improved by 20% over the last decade equating to an average saving of £230 per year per household, according to a report published by the Housing Executive today.

In environmental terms this means a reduction of almost 3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year compared to 1996 levels.

Millions of householders face a £105 increase on their annual energy bills price as utility companies introduce further rises, market experts warned yesterday.



All six major providers have put up their prices by an average of 15 per cent over the last three months. A further 10 per cent increase is predicted by the end of the year if oil and gas prices rise as expected.
